All adult education is under the rubric of ALITI, the Adult Learning Institute of Temple Israel of the Poconos, a synagogue which is the central address for traditional lifelong Jewish learning.
The main ongoing study program is our morning component, which is called in English, the STARS ACADEMY. It stands for Stroudsburg Talmud Torah Academy for Review and Study. In Hebrew it is known as Yeshivat Zichron Yisrael Yehoshua, in memory of our Rabbi's beloved father, I.J. Melman,z"l.
Monday mornings offer a two hour Parsha of the Week review. The Hebrew text is studied in both Hebrew and English translation. Utilizing traditional commentaries, as well as academic insights from modern scholarship, the upcoming weekly Torah portion becomes alive and relevant.
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings we offer daily Talmud study, called Sugya Yomi TM, utilizing the Aramaic text with English translation and explanation. We are currently immersed in the following Talmudic tractates: Pesachim (Tues), Sanhedrin (Wed) and Kiddushin (Thurs).
Following Talmud each morning, we study Halacha, a ten minute daily study of Jewish living, studying both halacha (law) and minhag (custom).
Jewish Laws and Customs for Daily
Living and Sabbath and Holidays, using Isaac Klein's classic
work. Tues, Wed and Thurs from 9:45 to 9:55 (STARS ACADEMY)
Tuesday evenings (in July only) from 6PM to 8 PMwe are offering a Summer Crash Course in Hebrew Reading. Registration is required. See below.
Wednesday mornings offer Advanced Hebrew, for graduates of our summer Level One Crash Course in Hebrew Reading. Level II offers in depth analysis and translation of our prayers in the Jewish service: Mincha, Maariv, Shacharit, for both Sabbath and weekdays. Participants in our Hebrew programs relate how much more meaningful services have become since taking the classes. In the Advanced Hebrew program, in addition to prayer analysis, we include practice in cursive Hebrew writing and applied Gematria, the study of numerology, showing insights into Hebrew words and their secret meanings.
Thursday evenings in the fall and spring we will again be offering a Mussar Workshop. We study refinement of character and personal growth utilizing this age old technique. Following the Mussar class we offer a Niggun workshop, called Entering Shabbos, where we chant and sing spiritual wordless melodies to percussive accompaniment. One Thursday evening a month,
beginning this summer, we are offering a class called In Aggada daVida: Stories of the Talmud for
Living. Daily Mishna Study In honor of my beloved mother's memory, I will be offering a Daily Mishna Study from
1:35 to 1:55 PM, Monday through Thursday. Mishna and
Neshama
(soul) share the
same letters, as they are each an anagram of the other. The
community
is invited to
attend, beginning with a short Mincha
service
from 1:30 to 1:35 PM. It would be a
great mitzvah to attend both, or even just the short
service,
to enable myself and others
an opportunity to say a daily Kaddish at the mincha service.
All our classes strive to welcome the novitiate in a warm and inviting non-judgmental atmosphere. Wherever you are at, there is opportunity to learn more and grow more.
There are no fees for the STARS ACADEMY. However, to show appreciation and give back for what one receives from the classes and programs, one is encouraged to make a monthly donation, as much as your heart dictates, to the Rabbi's Discretionary Fund.
PLEASE CALL THE RABBI FOR TIMES AND TO REGISTER at 570-730-4799.
