Welcome to Temple Israel of the Poconos

Temple Israel of the Poconos traces its history back to Yom Kippur 1919, when nine men met at Louis Nadelman's Main Street home to conduct the first religious service of the Jewish congregation. Two weeks later, Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Abeloff opened their home for Succot Festival services with Torahs borrowed from Congregation B'nai Abraham in Easton.

From that time until today, Temple Israel is proud to be known as "The Jewish Address of the Poconos." Our Rabbi is a sensitive, caring and joyful presence who cares for the needs of young and old alike with love, hope and dignity.

Shabbat is celebrated with services at 8 PM Friday and 9:30 AM Saturday. Our Religious School meets twice each week, from Pre-K to Post-Bar Mitzvah teen years, to teach the next generation the lessons of ancient and modern Jewish life. Students learn to read and pray in the Hebrew language; to celebrate the festivals of the Jewish year; to appreciate Jewish history and the rebirth of the Modern State of Israel, and to prepare for their Bar and Bat Mitzvah at age 13, through their teen years and beyond. Our teens enjoy a rich and varied youth program. Adult education classes emphasize adult Hebrew literacy and basic Jewish knowledge. Temple Israel is affiliated with United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. The gift shop supplies the entire community with Jewish gifts. Come connect with us. It's a good connection.
